Values and Goals

I think everyone’s path in life will look different. This seems simple but it has taken me years to fully understand the statement. I am constantly trying to make my thinking more flexible, so I can meet people, especially learners, where they are at. I value being understood and accepted and try to return the favour in everyday interactions.

I am beginning to see some potential areas of strong interest that I would like to pursue in the future. One is international education and creating a welcoming/ inclusive learning environment for students coming from abroad. I am also interested in language acquisition in young children and studying the effects environment has on this area of learning. My ideas are broad at the moment, and many derive from my travel and teaching experiences. I’m positive that after several years in the Education field, my interests will shift and develop.

I am preparing to move to Quebec at the moment, and I feel this connects to my preferred future as I have an intense interest in language and culture. It is an extra challenge, teaching in a province with a different official language, but it is one I welcome as I know it will lead to immense growth. Challenges prompt me to learn, as well as abundant curiosity to understand people and new ideas.

I would say that a weakness I have as a student is the ability to focus on one area. I feel excited about many areas and I want to learn it all! This could be a strength but I must learn to harness it and give everything I do adequate attention.
