Educators engage in professional learning.
I immensely enjoy professional learning of any kind. During all three of my practicums, I tried to take advantage of every opportunity to soak up knowledge. In the long-run, this creates more balanced and valuable educators. One of the more recent professional learning opportunities I took part in was a session on Risky Play. This idea of letting children discover natural consequences and develop their own boundaries seemed fascinating. Not only did I walk away with a more complete picture of what play can look like, but this approach was actually implemented on a school-wide basis!
Another very memorable professional learning opportunity was the session on Outdoor Education and it’s equalizing potential. This was lead by Reid Roberts at Shane Lake and I learned so much about trapping and hunting! It was amazing to hear how kids that had been struggling with day-to-day traditional learning, thrived in this setting!
